Principal’s Report
I have been away for two years on secondment at Dianella ESC and deferred leave travelling Australia and this time last year I would have been somewhere on the Oodnadatta Track. I would like to thank my Staff and Cran Collis for giving our students the opportunities to help them with their personal growth and improvement over the last two years.
I am sure there has been plenty of laughter, fun, chaos, covid and most of all learning.
- learning about who we are
- what we want
- how to achieve it
This term I was lucky enough to spend time with the students on camp at Ern Halliday in Joondalup. We all got to challenge our skills on the big swing, archery, ten pin bowling and laser corp. Where everyone seemed to make me the target of the game. A big thank you to the DFES Cadet staff for another successful year at camp.
Thank you
- To our wider community who support us every year, they never let us down
- Parents and carer for their continuous support
- IPS Board members for generously giving up their time to our school and our new Board Chairperson Laura Tolomei
Staff Goodbyes
- our brilliant School Officer Sue Howard who has worked with us since 2017
- our savvy Transition Officer Jocelyn will also be exploring other opportunities
Welcome
I would like to welcome Amber Sloan (School Officer) and Aaron Spice (Transition Coordinator) to the above positions for 2023
I speak for everyone at John Tonkin College ESC when I say thank you for letting us share your journey with us all, it has been lots of fun.
Happy Holidays and have a safe New Year – see all students on the 1st February 2023

Literacy
Duncan Sanders
Students had the choice to create a review of a video game, book or movie highlighting the plot, characters, actors, and reasons why they rated it highly. Korie, Casey and Nicholas were our literacy standouts writing and I encourage them to keep exploring their writing skills. All students enjoyed John Lydon’s Bugs and the Mega bugs series where they learnt interesting facts about the insect and bug world and why they are so important to the survival of our planet. Well done another year in Literacy ends and the students can be very proud of their achievements.
Cooking
Julie Higham/Charm Guest/Trish Bradford
In class we have completed our Lifeskills – cooking program and are impressed with students’ improved food preparation skills and also their ability to work cooperatively with everyone in the class. Top job everyone!
FG03
Tarryn Lambert/Laura Tolomei
FG03’s highlights were assembling, painting and decorating a garden bed at Rocky Bay, while hand feeding friendly horses apples and carrots. One highlight in particular is the creation of 36 charity bears in sewing with Mrs Craggs and delivered them to the students at Riverside Primary, where they got to say hello to their primary school teachers. It has been an amazing year with heaps of activities, memories and laughter we have shared together. Congratulations to all our year 12 students and all the best for the future. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Integrated Lifeskills
Danielle Du Plessis, Julie Higham, Duncan Sanders
The students continued to enjoy Integrated Lifeskills on Fridays this term. This included preparation and planning for the upcoming camps, washing cars, movie production which helped us build on our acting skills. Lots of enjoyment this term, we look forward to seeing you all in 2023

Numeracy
Julie Higham
During numeracy sessions we have worked on practical skills involving time and money. Staff have been blown-away by the increase in students’ confidence across the year, shown by their willingness to perform and present their work in front of each other. The T1 staff would like to wish all students and their families a safe and happy Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in 2023.

Retail
Meagan Green/Nat Harris/Nat Cook/Sue McAlpine
This term students decided on selling Christmas gifts to staff and parents – they all sold out, with painted Petunia Pots and Cookie in a Jar being most popular. The chocolate coated Pretzels were Mrs Harris’s favourite with some not making it to the packaging process! Proceeds from sales went to an end of term party, celebrating all students outstanding achievements in achieving Certificate 1 in Retail Services – Congratulations and good luck in your future studies.

Construction
Mark Barritt/Sharan Hegney/Jacquie Willcocks
The construction students finished off the year with the completion of their Brick Archway, and then the safe demolition of their projects and clean-up of the construction area and storage shed. Well done everyone for a great year in Construction.

Art
Laura Tolomei/Charm Guest/Tess Wyllie
Art has been another term of fabulously creativity minds at work.
We started the term glazing our clay work, we had to leave it over the holidays because it took forever to dry in this year’s cold winter. This term we tried our hand at lino block printing. I was a bit nervous because we needed to use sharp tools to cut into the lino. I was so proud, everyone followed safe carving procedures and not a drop of blood was spilled! I was so impressed with their finished product. All the prints had a WOW factor to them. They were so good we decided to print tote bags using our lino blocks.

Workshop
Mark Barritt/Danielle Du Plessis/Sheri Henderson/Jessica Tipton
As the 2022 school year drew to a close, Mr Barritt ensured everyone finished their major projects and they were able to add personal touches and turn their project into something that is as individual piece. Throughout the year, the students have learned many things, including reading plans, how to use different machines and equipment and most importantly how to work safely in the workshop. It is such a pleasure to see the pride and sense of achievement on the student's faces when they finish their project. Congratulations on a job well done to all students!

Emergency Cadet Program
Duncan Sanders/Sharan Hegney/Nat Harris
Another exciting year for the Cadets culminated in two excellent camps at Ern Halliday in Hillary’s. Students helped prepare the camp lunches and breakfasts and participated in all the activities such as Archery, The Big Swing and The Lost Pilot at the campsite. We also got to experience and enjoy excursions to Holey Moley, Lazer Corps and the movies. The behaviour of the students was exemplary, and they were able to demonstrate their learned skills in a camp environment.
The Cadet awards for 2022
Year 11 Cadet of the year: Elizabeth Davis
Year 11 Most outstanding Cadet: Jai Hunt
Year 12 Most outstanding: Emma Norton
Year 12 Cadet of the Year award: Shantell Griffiths
Well done everyone.

WorkPlace Learning
Marg Bowman
We rounded off the year with some great work placements and our students gained valuable experience. Feedback from our fantastic and supportive employers has been wonderful. Our School is very privileged to have these local businesses support our workplace learning program and we would like to take the time to thank each business who helps our students experience meaningful work in a supportive environment.
Thank you to all parents/carers and students for being organised for the workday and representing our school so well within the community. I would like to say a huge thank you to our school staff who have provided support ensuring the success of the Workplace Learning program.

Transition
Jocelyn Carosin and Julie Woodman
In Week 8 our school welcomed our new students who will be enrolling at JTCESC next year. The Year 10 Halls Head College Education Support Centre (HHCESC) students took part in a 3-day Transition Program to help students become more familiar with their new school and meet their new School Principal, Teachers and Education Assistants which was a great success. The students of HHCESC cannot wait to attend JTCESC in 2023 and both our students and staff are looking forward to building strong connections and positive outcomes for each new student.
JTCESC Disability Expo 2022
The Expo was held 4 November 2022 at the Mandurah Forum on which included 40 stall holders of disability service providers, inclusive sporting groups and community-based organisations. This was a wonderful opportunity to gain information on post school options and community engagement for our students, parents, families, and carers within the Mandurah community. The Transition Officer coordinated the event with several organisations including the Department of Education, APM Communities, Mandurah Forum, and local Disability Service Providers.
Breakfast Club
Meagan Green/Sue McAlpine
This term has been full of lots of laughter, empty plates, and happy students. The old favourite for students has been cheese toasties and vegetarian quiche.
A huge thankyou to Foodbank Mandurah for providing us with bread and other items for our toasties this year.
Other News
School Ball
Graham, Joseph, Stanley Harley, Korbin, Lee, Katie, Montana, Kassi, Keira, Casey, Nicholas, Byron, Emma and Shantell all attended the annual Year 12 School Ball, this year’s theme was the “Dripping in Luxury”. All the girls looked stunning in their frocks and the boys were all very handsome in suits and ties. Emma was awarded the “best dancer” and Stanley “most social”.
It was wonderful to see our students and JTC mainstream students dancing and mingling together to create amazing memories and friendships.
All students had a fantastic night, Mrs Green, Mrs Bradford and Mrs Guest were super proud of all the students.
