Principal’s Report
Well, we certainly started this term with a bang!
The school review was on the Wednesday of week one. The reviewers were very impressed with the contributions made by the staff throughout the day to verify and fill in any gaps with the material presented on the Electronic School Assessment Tool (ESAT).
We were very busy with excursions across many learning areas:
Cadets had excursions to SES Mandurah, DFES Education & Heritage Centre Perth and a Fire Extinguisher Training incursion.
The Integrated Life Skills Program or Fun Friday group went to the World Skills Expo, MPAC Art Exhibition and Mandurah Forum.
The Construction class went to the Construction Futures Centre and experienced some amazing virtual reality construction technologies.
Our strong commitment to community through Creative Manufacturing culminated in a whole school excursion to the Mandurah Homelessness Awareness Day making donations to the cause with bags that double up as pillows.
Retail raised $129 for Jeans for Genes Day selling delicious gourmet hamburgers and soft drinks.
Riverside Year 5/6’s came for familiarisation program, working well in the workshop and kitchen making all sorts of interesting nick knacks and delicious snacks.
We held the 2021 Halls Head Open Day, which was well attended by parents. This gave parents a forum to clear up any questions or concerns they may have had about coming to a new school.
The annual Kalabilities AFL carnival was again brilliantly organised and very well attended by many ESC schools. We lost only one game by a narrow margin to the eventual winners and played all games in great sportsmanship and spirit.
The school ball was held on the second last day of term, both JTCESC and JTC students were exceptionally well behaved and partied very hard with Griffen winning the award for best dancer. A huge thanks to Kim Savins (Principal JTC), Julie Harris (Student Services) and all the staff and students at JTC for inviting us and making us feel so welcome.
Please keep these dates in mind for term four, which as usual will be jam packed and fly bye!

English

In two English classes this term we have started a deep dive into newspaper writing. Each student is creating their own newspaper. They are writing articles about the community access programs we have been on, as well as their workplace learning experience if they choose. We have been working on the ‘Who, What, When, Where, Why’ formula for writing newspaper articles. Luckily for us, during the Fun Friday program the students have attended several community access excursions to write about. We have also been receiving The West Australian each Monday and as a class we choose an article to read together. So far we have had great discussions about death rates after being in custody, an Aboriginal teen who was involved in an accident in Kalgoorlie and some baby foxes learning the ropes of life. I am looking forward to reading everyone’s newspapers!
In the third class we are working on matching upper case letter with the lower case letter of the alphabet, working on writing key words, sound and letter matching and using OSMO for word play.

Cooking
Kristin Lucas/Danielle Du Plessis/Lorna Craggs/Sheri Henderson
In cooking this term, we have been making small changes to everyday meals we love, to transform them into healthy balanced meals that meet our body’s needs. We have made smoked salmon omelettes; wholemeal chicken burgers and spaghetti bolognaise with loads of veggies!
Part of a healthy balanced diet is to occasionally spoil ourselves, so we have also been making delicious sweet treats including custard tarts, ice cream sandwiches, apple pie and a quick and easy chocolate mug cake.

Integrated Lifeskills - (Fun Fridays)
Kristin Lucas, Laura Tolomei, Tarryn Lambert
Fun Fridays are all about learning about what is available in our community and how to access it safely and appropriately. We have been on many excursions and had loads of fun this term. We have been to Mandurah Forum to look around and enjoy a lunch at The Eatery, MPAC to see an art exhibition. James, the curator told us about the paintings, and we got to choose which artwork we liked best and we also played in an interschool football competition.
One of our focuses has been personal hygiene. Students in groups made and presented posters, PowerPoint presentations and produced short plays to remind us about the importance of good personal hygiene.
We made boats and tested them to see which could hold the most before it sank as part of the STEM program.
We are now busy planning for our next pop up store and looking forward to some music and movement classes.

This term our students practised using Transperth Journey Planner and Google maps - as these websites are really helpful when planning travel around Perth and beyond. They were given problem questions and needed to solve how to get to a destination on their own. Students were given scenarios on unexpected problems that could arise while traveling and needed to give ideas on solving them. A very important topic this term was on Road Safety and how to keep safe around roads and traffic while walking or catching public transport.
Students googled Transperth infringements and fines and were surprised to see what were considered offences and how much the spot fines and maximum penalties were. They used Google maps to work out the distance and travel times using different modes of transport from their house to various destinations. With more practice students will become independent and navigate their way around WA and beyond. Our mathematicians planned a Sausage Sizzle and brainstormed items that were needed, and researched costs of the items on different retail websites. They also compared which supermarkets offered the best deals to save money.
Some of our students have been working on their money handling skills, playing games together from matching numbers in Bingo or pictures in Zingo. They played musical chairs and are working well on their number recognition. Some of our students even had the privilege of watching Dogs perform tricks.

Creative Manufacturing

Another term done and dusted, where does the time go!
As always, the students have been working hard, they have nearly completed the theory component of the course and have been producing a variety of beautiful items that are being donated to Halo and The Foster Share Shed.
This term we went on an excursion to the “Homeless Expo” that was held at the Mandurah foreshore, there were a number of providers and organisation that had stalls one being Halo (one of the organisations we support) we delivered 38 water resistant duffle bags that the students’ had made.
We also went on an excursion to The Foster Share Shed and delivered a doll’s house, a car parking unit, bags, weighted snakes, textured blankets and some fidget toys that the students made followed with lunch at the foreshore.
It has been awesome to see the class come together and display positive teamwork, showing initiative when they see someone needs help and completing tasks/ quality control to a high standard.
Have a safe and wonderful break.

Retail

Students are enjoying completing their units online and have been learning how to plan, prioritise and schedule tasks in the workplace. Our sausage sizzle fundraiser - Jeans for Genes, raised $129 with Kyron and Mrs Guests chocolate brownies a hit!
This term our excursions have taken us to the foreshore discovering awareness for Homelessness Day and the various businesses that can provide support. It was a great day with students interacting with local business staff and volunteers. Retail students have been invited back to Foodbank which will occur in September providing practical skills for our next unit in study – Organise and Maintain the Store Environment.
We are swapping hot dogs for hamburgers on certain days this term, students are keen to bring variety into our Retail lunches to try and increase sales. Kyron and Mrs Guest will be baking various sweet treats for sale at lunch on Thursdays for the rest of the year with proceeds going towards Telethon.

Construction
Mark Barritt/Sharan Hegney/Sheri Henderson
During term 3 the construction students have been working on completing their brick letterbox’s. They have been practicing teamwork, setting up the work area in the morning and cleaning up and packing away the tools and equipment in the afternoon, and working independently whilst building their projects.
Students have also been practicing wall tiling and had a visit to the Construction Futures Centre.

Workshop
Mark Barritt/Laura Tolomei/Jacquie Willcocks/Nat Harris/Charm Guest
Our clever students have been working very hard on their major project this term. Some students have finished, and they look fabulous. Others are very close to finishing. So good to see everyone wearing the correct PPE when needed. We have been exploring the world of 3D printing; using a program called Tinkercad students have designed name tags and are in the process of printing them on the 3D printer. Some students have taken to designing on Tinkercad like pros and have started designing things like model tanks or jewellery.
Well done Workshop students, you should be proud of your achievements.

Emergency Cadet Program
Peter McClay/ Sharan Hegney/Tarryn Lambert
This term our Cadets have being learning about natural disasters. We learned about floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, bushfires and structure fires. They needed to create their own evacuation plan and know what to pack in case of an emergency. In pairs the cadets needed to produce a community information poster about cyclones and present their work to the class. This linked into our excursion trips where we travelled by train to the Fire Heritage Centre and State Emergency Service.
We had an incursion on fire extinguisher training, where our students learned about the use of fire extinguishers and knowing which extinguisher to use on which fuel source, whether its paper, fuel, oil or electrical.

Workplace Learning
Marg Bowman
The majority of our students have now completed their work placements and we have had some good feedback for our students from employers which is great to hear.
Students have also been very conscientious in managing the filling out of the logbook, getting employer to sign and bringing it to school.
The success of Workplace Learning is dependent on the generosity of the employers. Without them the programme would not give the students the opportunity to experience the real world of work, develop their employability skills, independence and confidence.
Thank you to all parents/carers and students for being organised for the workday and representing our school so well within the community.
A big thank you to all students for doing such an excellent job!

Art
Laura Tolomei/Jacquie Willcocks/Lorna Craggs
We have had a very productive time this term. Our focus has been building with clay slabs. Students have made pots and boxes using slab building techniques. Others have made free form sculptures using clay. The bone-dry work has gone through its first firing and students are busy decorating them with underglaze and then clear glaze.
We have also entered the ESSN art competition for Term 3, the theme was “The Royal Show”. Our students concentrated on creating artwork around fireworks and the types of food found at the show. The finished pieces are fabulous; results will be announced in Term 4.

Health & Phys Ed
Chris Wilton
Term 3 in Health and Physical Education saw our school represented at an AFL 9’s Football carnival held at the U.W.A sports oval. It was great to see so many of our students put in a very good effort and for some, display tremendous courage and resilience by participating in their first competitive game of footy. All that were there had an enjoyable time and were even able to hang out with a couple of AFL mascots (a magnificent blue and yellow Eagle and some dodgy purple thing! can you guess which team I support?). It was so pleasing to see all the hard work the students had put in during Phys Ed pay off on the day, winning three games and only being slightly behind at the final siren once.
Health this term has had a focus on personal hygiene, relationships and reproduction. The students have displayed maturity and respect when completing activities and discussing important topics such as consent.

SAVE the DATE – Friday, 29 October 2021
It’s that time of year again where our awesome school host and facilitate the annual Disability Expo held at the Mandurah Forum.
Save the date in your calendar and head down to the Mandurah Forum to meet with various Disability Support agencies and connect with local community organisations.
Over the past 5 Tuesday of Term 3, we’ve seen the return of the Year 5/6 students from Riverside ESC come over to JTCESC to work in the workshop with Mr Barritt to construct a stool made from timber and canvas. Students got to use the equipment such as the drop saw, vice, sanding blocks, electric hand drill, screwdriver and drill press under the close supervision of both Riverside and JTCESC staff. Students also got the opportunity to cook in JTCESC’s fully equipped kitchen.
Each Tuesday the students alternated between cooking healthy delicious meals with Mrs Green, such as cheesy bacon puffs, weetbix banana muffins and many many more tasty delights! Mrs Green taught the students the basic safety rules of working in a kitchen and how to safely use kitchen appliances correctly. Staff and students from Riverside ESC loved participating in their 5-week program at our school and we loved having them! At JTCESC, we value the strong partnerships we have with our local Primary Education Support Centres.

Cadets WA Long Service Medal
Congratulations to our awesome Cadet leader Mr Peter McClay for being awarded the Cadets WA Long Service Medal. 10 years’ service 2009 – 2019.
When Peter McClay took over the leadership of the unit he did so with professionalism and unwavering loyalty not only to the program but to his Cadet Leaders and to the Cadets themselves, creating an environment that is not only inclusive of all cadets and their individual abilities but creates a positive environment where cadets strive to learn and are proud to demonstrate to him what they have learnt.
Peter has always been prepared to go the extra mile to assist the cadets and modify lessons or equipment to enable all to participate as much as possible. Each year we take the students on a camp and it is lovely to see them all come together and see the little things that really make a difference for:
- the cadets assisting each other to pre-pare a meal.
- a cadet just quietly stepping in to assist another when they see them struggling to do something without being asked.
- or the cheers of the cadets when someone faces their fears and accomplishing the big swing or taking that rather large step of a flying fox.
- or just stepping up and taking their turn of responsibility and showing respect by carrying the first aid bag so leaders don't have to carry all the load.
Mr McClay was presented his 10 years’ service medal by Mrs Hegney and Mr Chris Strickland from SES Mandurah, JTCESC staff and students.

School Ball
Taliah, Shellan, Ashton, Mason, Griffen and Joshua all attended the annual Year 12 School Ball, this year’s theme was the “Secret Garden”. Taliah and Shellan looked stunning in their frocks and the boys were all very handsome in suits and ties. Griffen was awarded best dancer of the night.
It was wonderful to see our students and JTC mainstream students dancing and mingling together to create amazing memories and friendships.
All students had a fantastic night, Mrs Carosin and Mr Collis were super proud of all the students.

Footy Tipping
After 23 rounds of footy tipping the 2021 JTCESC Footy Tipping has come to an end. Congratulations to everyone who participated, but as they say there can only be one winner.
Top student tipper – GRIFFEN with 127 Top staff tipper – MRS HENDERSON with 140
