Principal’s Report

Here we are at the end of the semester for 2021. The fickled finger of fate or is it irony that sees the semester end as it began, being impacted by the global pandemic! Nevertheless, JTCESC forges ahead with doing its best for all the students. The students have also worked hard regardless of the lockdowns, mask wearing and hygiene requirements, showing great resilience and courage.

Fortunately, students have been able to do some excursions such as the WA Museum, Mandurah Croquet Club and the foreshore. The Friday program is running beautifully providing a variety of valuable activities such as Drumbeat, interview skills and Enterprise, which has raised $149 dollars which will be donated to Mandurah Wildlife Rescue.

The Cadet program with ‘Fishabilities’ this term was amazing. All students caught a number of fish, some good sized Leather Jackets too!

Workplace Learning got underway with the first group completing their rotation with promising reports. We had our Taster Program with Meadow Springs Primary ESC participating in Cooking and Workshop which was a great success.

I would also like to again make mention of our newest staff member Ms Lambert who has settled in beautifully and made an instant connection to the students.

We all look forward to a safe and productive Term 3. JTCESC wishes all the students and families a fun filled and safe holiday.

Cran Collis
Principal

Students First Day Term 4

English

Kristin Lucas

In English this term we have been working on creating a brochure about Rights and Responsibilities in the workplace. Students brainstormed as a class and did independent research on each topic.

They used MS Publisher to each create a brochure that was relevant to their work placement. There was a wide variety of excellent brochures produced.

Cooking

Kristin Lucas/Lorna Craggs/Sheri Henderson

In cooking we have created some great food. This term each class was allowed to choose what they wanted to cook so there were three different recipes made each day!

We made chicken parmigiana, stroganoff, breakfast wraps and Donner kababs.

We also helped out by cooking cakes for the “Just the Cakes” business enterprise that the students started on Fun Fridays.

Integrated Lifeskills - (Fun Fridays)

Kristin Lucas, Laura Tolomei, Tarryn Lambert

Fun Fridays had been full of adventure, learning new skills and being out in the community.

Our business enterprise was a pop up cake shop. We voted on the name “Just The Cake”, the types of cakes we would offer and that we would donate our takings to Mandurah Wildlife Rescue.

We have been on excursions to the WA Museum Boola Bardip, Mandurah Croquet Club, and Vinnies.

It has been such a delight to see students communicating positively, working as a team, navigating public transport, and problem solving. New friendships have been made and much laughter and fun has been had.

Maths

Tarryn Lambert

This semester, students covered a few topics and explored different areas in Maths. They learnt that we live in a three–dimensional world and that every one of us has height, width and length. We have seen that 3d shapes exist in our world, too like game dice, cuboids, doughnuts, pyramids, beach balls, traffic cones. They learnt how to use different measuring apparatus to measure and weigh items in our classroom and kitchen. Some of the students followed a recipe and baked golden delicious scones followed by a warm cup of Milo. A very important area that we learnt about the importance of good money handling skills. Students were shown where the money comes from, how to budget, how to spend wisely and how to set savings goals.

They explored timetables, this is important for being independent and being able to do skills, like travelling using public transport and reading transport timetables so you can plan your schedule. Our students enjoyed running around our school in a game of The Amazing Race. Students were each given a map of our school where they needed to find 7 different locations. Each location had maths problems or riddle that needed solving. They displayed excellent team-building skills and perseverance during this activity.

Creating Manufacturing

Trish Bradford/ Lorna Craggs/Tess Wyllie

The students have been extremely productive this term!

The students have been working extremely hard to complete all the items they have been making for their chosen charities. They have experienced challenges and triumphs in this process but at no time did they complain or give up, this is a true testament to all students.

We went on an excursion on the Foster Share Shed to deliver the items they had made.

Whilst there the students helped wrap lucky dips for the children and were spoilt with tasty cupcakes.

When the students delivered all the items it was so wonderful to see how proud they were of themselves and the realisation of the positive affect they have created for others in our community. I’m so proud of you all.

Retail

Meagan Green/ Peter McClay/Nat Harris/Jacquie Willcocks/Charm Guest/Julie Woodman

Students are on track with their Certificate 1 in Retail and have covered Work Safety, Communication in the Workplace and are now learning about working effectively in the service environment.

The sausage sizzle held by the Retail group is running smoothly with all students effectively working as a team with excellent feedback from John Tonkin College students and staff.

This term we visited Peel Foodbank during volunteer week where students had the opportunity to assist in preparing care packages, re-stock shelves and learn about the general daily processes of Foodbank operations. Staff were so impressed with our Retail students they have asked us to return!

Construction

Mark Barritt/Sharan Hegney/Sheri Henderson

During Term 2 students have been learning about Handling Construction Materials and Workplace Communication as well as developing their Occupational Health and Safety knowledge and skills.

Students have been practicing brick paving and further developing their hand skill whilst learning to render a wall and lay wall tiles. The Construction students also moved the ‘reserved parking sign’ for Mr Collis.

Workshop

Mark Barritt/Laura Tolomei/Jacquie Willcocks/Nat Harris/Charm Guest

It’s been a very productive term in workshop and most students are well on their way to finishing their major project for the year.

We have also been experimenting with the laser cutter and the 3D printer. Nearly all students have been able to have their chosen printed on the 3D printer with some pretty interesting results.

Emergency Cadet Program

Peter McClay/ Sharan Hegney/Tarryn Lambert

Term 2 has been wide-ranging; we started early in the term learning how to march, which is an ongoing skill that we will continue to practice to be ready for our Remembrance Day activities.

Our Cadets have learnt to assemble a range of different types of tents, this was a fun problem solving activity with cadets given minimal instructions, a tent in a bag and instructed to erect their tents. Everyone worked together and formed teams to get the different tents erected.

We studied the ANZAC legend, and how to bake ANZAC biscuits and making poppies ready for wreath laying on Remembrance Day.

How to survive in the bush and the desert (which included how to start a fire with water and how to make water with a plastic bag) was our next subject. First we learnt how through proper planning we can avoid getting into a bad situation, what the rule of 3’s for survival is, how to keep calm, work out priorities and how to signal for help.

Cadets completed a first aid refresher course and are now learning about natural disasters a fun reward for all their hard work was a fishing excursion to MOFSC thanks to Fishabilities followed by a BBQ at Henry Sutton Grove.

Workplace Learning

Marg Bowman

The first group of students have finished their work placements for 2021. We have had some great feedback from employers. As part of the Year 12’s transition pathway some students will be carrying on in their placements until Week 5 of Term 4.

The students have had the opportunity to gain experience in real day-to-day work situations; dealing with people, problem solving and using initiative. All students have made great progress with confidence and building on their Employability Skills.

The second group of students have started their placements which are all going well.

Thank you to all parents/carers and students for being organised for the work day and representing our school so well within the community. We are so proud of our students who have completed their work placements for 2021.

Art

Laura Tolomei/Jacquie Willcocks/Lorna Craggs

This term, students have been working on abstract landscapes. We used Google Maps to find interesting looking birds eye views of places then used carbon paper to trace the outline of the map. We then used coloured pencils to fill in the resulting shapes.

Students have also been working on individual art projects. We have had some students making boxes, medallions, jewellery, paint dipping and pouring while other students have chosen to refine their drawing skills

Health & Phys Ed

Chris Wilton

This term in Health and Phys Ed has seen our students engage in a variety of activities and sports. There has been a focus on basketball, modified hockey, football and fitness circuits in P.E, with students further developing skills that include striking, kicking and catching as well as increasing overall health, strength and balance.

Health classes have included topics such as protective behaviours, cyber safety, stress and mental health.

Transition

Jocelyn Carosin

Centrelink Visits

As a result, from some of our IEP parent/teacher meetings we had in Term 1, the Transition Officer arranged a number of parent/student early morning appointments at Centrelink to help submit student’s Disability Support Pension paperwork.

In addition, this Term, a number of Year 12 students registered with Bizlink, a Disability Employment Service provider, who’s role is to help students find employment as part of their post school options. As a parent/carer, if you would like assistance in connecting your child to any external service providers, applying for Centrelink’s Disability Support Pension, registering for a Companion Card, or have any questions around your child’s transition into post school activities, please do not hesitate to contact Jocelyn Carosin, the Transition Officer or send an email on: Jocelyn.carosin@education.wa.edu.au

Over the past 6 Tuesday of Term 2, we’ve seen the return of the Year 5/6 students from Meadow Springs ESC come over to JTCESC to work in the workshop with Mr Barritt to construct a stool made from timber and canvas. Students got to use the equipment such as the drop saw, vice, sanding blocks, electric hand drill, screw driver and drill press under the close supervision of both Riverside and JTCESC staff. Students also had the opportunity to cook in JTCESC’s fully equipped kitchen.

Each Tuesday, the students alternated between cooking healthy delicious meals with Mrs Green, such as cheesy bacon puffs, weetbix banana muffins and many many more tasty delights! Mrs Green taught the students the basic safety rules of working in a kitchen and how to safely use kitchen appliances correctly. Staff and students from Meadow Springs ESC loved participating in their 6-week program at our school and we loved having them! Next term we welcome the young students from Riverside ESC to participate in the same program.

At JTCESC, we value the strong partnerships we have with our local Primary Education Support Centres.

Breakfast Club

Meagan Green

A variety of healthy food is available to all of our students 4 days a week at recess. These include fresh fruit, pasta, quiche, rice dishes, toasties, slices, yoghurt and smoothies.

One of the favourite dishes this term has been vegemite and cheese sticks, its very easy to make and tastes great.

Vegemite Cheese Sticks

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets puff pastry frozen
  • 4 teaspoons vegemite
  • 2/3 cup finely grated parmesan cheese

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 220 Celsius. Grease oven trays, line with baking paper.
  2. Place frozen puff pastry on baking paper. Spread 1 sheet puff pastry with 2 teaspoons Vegemite, sprinkle with 1/3 cup finely grated parmesan cheese. Top with another sheet puff pastry, spread with 2 teaspoons Vegemite, then sprinkle with 1/3 cup finely grated parmesan cheese.
  3. Cut pastry stack in half, place one stack on top of the other, cover with baking paper and press down firmly. Fold back baking paper. Cut pastry crossways into 24 strips; twist each strip, pinching ends to seal. Place on trays, bake about 12 minutes or until browned lightly.

Other News

Meet our new school member

Hi I’m Tarryn Lambert the new Maths Teacher in T1. I am happy to be part of the JTC Education Support Centre.

Fun facts and what I do in my spare time

I’m a mum of 3 boys, who love soccer and spends my Saturday mornings cheering them along the sidelines. We enjoy walks along the beach and then watching the sunset, I find this therapeutic and peaceful.

Qualifications and Why I love Teaching

I am an Early Childhood and Primary School Teacher. I have been teaching for 2 years but have also been an Education Assistant for several years, where most of my knowledge and experience in teaching was obtained. I am passionate about helping students realise their full potential, by nurturing the child as a whole, this includes all aspects of the child’s well-being, social-emotional development, physical, creative, and cognitive ability.

The best thing about our school?

I love Fun Fridays, especially because we can connect with the students in a more relaxed environment. But, the most important of all is teaching our students functional maths to help them one day in the workplace and life skills in general.
