Principal’s Report

It has been great to see all students and staff settle back into the school routine, the year 2020 will definitely be a year to remember. Even though excursions and incursions were placed on hold it is now full steam ahead for Term 3 with an excursion to Dwellingup to be part of the Nearer to Nature tour which provides opportunities for students learn about the nature of Western Australia and ensure it is protected and conserved for its intrinsic values and to enrich people’s lives.

We are in the process updating our school logo and appreciate all who sent back the survey. We shall have the new logo on our new cookbook so don’t forget to send via email (rebecca.christensen@education.wa.edu.au) your easy to make favourite recipes to go into the new cookbook.

A big thank you to Mandurah workplaces for allowing our students to return to workplace learning, we really appreciate it. This valuable experience teaches our students the very important employability skills such as teamwork, self-management and problem solving just to name a few.

Best wishes to Susie, Marnie and Jocelyn who have left us to pursue greener pasture, we welcome Janine Robertson into JTESC.

School reports will be sent out via post Week 10 if you would like a copy emailed please let us know.

Classroom News

FG03

Kristin Lucas and Laura Tolomei

After a slow start to the term due to COVID-19, it was great to have a full cohort back at school Week 4 of term 2. We have been working hard to catch up with all of the work we need to do! We have been enjoying rotations on Mondays and Tuesdays to work in small groups on our units for our VET course Access to Vocational Pathways. In our rotations we have been looking at careers that suit each individual, thinking about our personality traits and learning styles as well as reading, speaking and numeracy. We were lucky to have Keelley Bradshaw a psychology prac student in our class for three weeks this term. She quickly became an invaluable member of FG03 team and we all enjoyed having a new face in the classroom. As a class we made a great display for Sorry Day and we learned about the Stolen Generation and what Sorry Day is all about. We also have been cooking up a storm making burgers, tacos and pizzas to name a few. Recently we were excited to get back into our bi-weekly shopping trips to buy food for our cooking sessions. Next term we have the amazing opportunity to take over Breakfast Club for Rebecca on Mondays

For HASS we have been discussing Land Rights and the faces and people who changed the laws about land ownership and working conditions for Aboriginal people. We also watched the movie Mabo about Eddie Mabo.

T1

Julie Higham

We have had a great second term, continuing our cooking program. We have made egg-fried rice, burgers, stir-fried chicken and noodles and pasta bake. Students are becoming increasingly OSH aware in the kitchen, following hygiene regulations and becoming aware of the dangers around equipment, especially knives. We have been learning how to keep our fingers away from knife blades by using a bridge hold and claw grip, or using a fork to hold ingredients still while chopping and slicing.

Our weekly coffee enterprise is going really well, and students are practising their social and verbal skills while taking orders and doing deliveries. We are counting money and giving change, and learning how to use the coffee machine. Any profit made will be going to a charity that helps survivors of domestic violence.

We are also enjoying our karaoke session for an afternoon each week. We have lots of budding rockstars and LOTS of fun.

Creative Manufacturing

Trish Bradford/Lorna Craggs/Tess Wyllie

What an interesting and challenging time we have had this term, but I’m happy to say our wonderful students have come back ready to work and continue making the wonderful times for our various charities.

The joey pouches were a hit, they will be snuggly warm and dry this winter, and the chemo bags were greatly appreciated by those going through a challenging time.

The students have been working in groups making either water-resistant duffle bags for Halo’s clientele or bird stands and perches for Mandurah’s Just Joey Marsupial Care and Wildlife Centre.

It is so wonderful to see the students so engaged and focused when they are working on their chosen item, they have been coming up with great ideas that we have been able to implement along the way.

Retail

Kristin Lucas/Nat Harris/Jacquie Willcocks/Peter McClay

In Retail this term our intended curriculum of attending an external retail course, provided by Good Sammy’s, was interrupted by COVID-19. To add to that, we had to hold off on our trips to visit retail spaces and hold our Sausage Sizzles. We worked diligently on paperwork and each Retail day we cooked a meal to share with the school. Toward the end of the term we were able to start our Sausage sizzles and we have been using the time to perfect the tasks of preparation and service such as shopping, chopping onions, icing drinks, cooking the food and serving customers using COVID safe hygiene practices. The students are to be commended for their flexibility and ability to change as the rules were enforced and eased. We look forward to some more retail-related excursions next term.

Construction

Mark Barritt/Penny Madigan/Sheri Henderson

During Term 2 students have been learning about Handling Construction Materials and Workplace Communication as well as developing their Occupational Health and Safety knowledge and skills. Students have been working in teams to build a brick archway for their Basic Construction Project that they will finish off by rendering and tiling. We have also been building a small brick wall to finish off our brick paving practice area.

Workshop

Mark Barritt/Laura Tolomei

Workshop has been a buzz of activity this term. While students have been working on their chosen projects they have been learning valuable skills. It’s great to see most students able to set up and pack down their workspace sensibly and safely. They are also learning about workplace safety and how to use tools, equipment and machinery correctly. Many projects are nearing completion and ready for the finishing touches to smooth off rough edges and paint or stain. We look forward to seeing how they turn out. Students have also had the opportunity to use the 3D printer to print items they have selected through the Thingiverse website.

Emergency Cadet Program

Peter McClay/Nat Harris/Sharan Hegney/Mark Barritt/Julie Higham

A disrupted start to Term 2, then having all excursions cancelled for most of the term due to the Covid19 virus has been a challenge for our Cadets, to their credit they have worked diligently to complete all First Aid components of the Cadet program.

CPR training has seen all Cadets in the program becoming competent in their ability to perform this life saving skill. A focus on the DRABCD action plan and the completion of the online first aid course “Click to Save” has seen our Cadets gain a valuable life skill.

Our Cadets have also been designing their own First Aid book that they can take home at the of the term.

Also during the term (in place of an excursion) Cadets tried their hand at cooking damper using the trangia stoves, this was a fun and tasty diversion.

Workplace Learning

Marg Bowman

Students from T1 who commenced their placements in Term 1 Week 4 were working well in various locations in the community; Intelife, Good Start Early Learning Centre, Halo, Mandurah Performance, Falcon Library, Workpower, GSI, Critters Up Close and our long time host employer Hot Klobba.

But due to restrictions at the time all placements had to be postponed until Term 3.

A few students have started back at their placements and hopefully from the beginning of Term 3 all students will be out and about in the community.

Our school is very appreciative of the employers who allow our students to gain an understanding of being an employee which also adds to their resumes.

Art

Laura Tolomei/Jacquie Willocks/Charm Guest/Lorna Craggs

As always I am continually amazed at the creativity and focus our art students bring to class. It has been great to see them take an idea or technique, experiment with it then make it their own. At the beginning of the term, we glazed and fired the ceramic work we finished at the end of Term 1. All the pieces survived the firing and came out looking magnificent. Recently we have been using watercolours, experimenting with mixing colours and using a variety of techniques to get different effects. The finished products are outstanding.

Health & Phys Ed

Chris Wilton

Term 2 in Phys Ed has seen our students engage in Soccer and Fitness plus gain a greater understanding of alcohol in health class.

It was excellent to see everyone come back raring to go in Phys Ed after the Covid 19 lockdown and I want to say the students have shown great patience and understanding as we had to do things a little differently. Modified games have been played while key skills and techniques have been taught. In addition, squats, push-ups, sit-ups, star jumps and even the odd burpee or two have been seen being undertaken by not only the students, but some staff members also (you know who you are).

During Health, safe alcohol practices have been taught and discussed. Students learning has included; what is a standard drink, alcohol’s effect on the body and how to prepare and stay safe when going out.

Breakfast Club

Rebecca Christensen

With the cold weather coming, I am starting to include warm soups in Breakfast Club. This term we have had a lovely Pumpkin Soup. The exciting news is that we are making a cook book and are asking everyone to contribute their family or personal favourite recipe to our book. Please send in with your student to school or email to rebecca.christensen@education.wa.edu.au, so we can include it in the book.

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients

1.2kgs pumpkin (any type)

I onion – sliced

2 cloves garlic

3 cups of vegetable or chicken stock

1 cup water

salt and pepper

½ cup cream

Instructions

Peel and de-seed pumpkin, cut into 3cm cubes.

Place the pumpkin, onion, garlic, stock and water into a pot. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and let simmer until pumpkin is tender.

Remove from heat and use a stick blender to blend until smooth.

Season to taste with salt and pepper, stir through cream.

Ladle soup into bowls, drizzle over a bit of cream, sprinkle with pepper and parsley if desired.

Serve with crusty bread.

Transition

Janine Robertson

In Term 2 I have been welcomed by the John Tonkin College Education Support Centre staff and students as the Transition Support Officer. During this term I have been able to meet with parents/carers of the Year 12 students at the (ITP) Individual Transition Plan meetings to discuss assisting the students with the transitioning of life after school in line with their interests, strengths and ambitions. I thank all of the students, parents/carers for taking the time to meet with me and let me be a part of this journey. Please do not hesitate to contact me and I will assist where I can.

WELCOMING SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

As part of the Transition program we will be welcoming visits in Term 3, from Halls Head ESC, Riverside ESC and Meadow Springs ESC where the students will participate in our programs, cooking, woodwork, and art.

EXPO

JTCESC DisAbility Expo is where we bring over 50 stalls together to provide information and awareness of ALL services to ALL people with disabilities. We are finalising the event date at this stage. Details will follow with a SAVE THE DATE!
