This term has flown by! In Numeracy, students looked at time and simple fractions. We did lots of work with digital and analogue clocks and using ‘am’ and ‘pm’. We also looked at halves, thirds and quarters. Several students successfully completed their Numeracy Foundation Skills Units of Competency.

In Literacy, we focused on spelling, vocabulary and remembering personal details. Students investigated words in context, synonyms and spelling rules. We also worked on letter writing, resumes and job applications. Some students completed Reading Foundation Skills Units of Competency.

Many students participated in work placements and a lot of good things were said about them by their host employers! We completed all our logbooks for Workplace Learning, much to the relief of students. Most members of the class completed a Power Point presentation on a work place problem and a solution as part of their Foundation Skills Units.

In Health, students in FGO3 continued with fitness walks. We looked at friendships, safe and unsafe activities and continued with the Zones of Regulation Program to help regulate our emotions.

We also looked at the virtues of Purposefulness and Perseverance and students completed a banner showing drawings of their future goals that would require purposefulness to accomplish. This was presented to parents and carers at the Virtues Assembly.

In week 5 we had a class excursion to HMAS Stirling, Garden Island, and students had the opportunity to go aboard a submarine, HMAS Rankin. They were very brave going up and down the ladders in very confined spaces and really enjoyed the tour of the control room, galleys, submariner’s quarters and torpedo bay. The chance for writing ‘thank you’ letters was not wasted by Mrs V!

We have had a very busy and enjoyable term. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the students of FGO3 and their families a happy and safe Christmas and a wonderful 2020!

T1

Julie Higham

This Term we have enjoyed the cadet camps and going to Rockingham Foreshore for the Castaways Exhibition.

In class we have completed our Lifeskills – cooking program, and are impressed with students’ improved food preparation skills and also their ability to work cooperatively with everyone in the class. Top job T1!

In literacy we have been working on our resumes and improving our inference skills in reading. During numeracy sessions we have worked on practical skills involving time and money.

The T1 staff have been blown-away by the increase in students’ confidence across the year, shown by their willingness to perform in Music Rocks and also to present their work in assembly. We would like to give an extra big shout out to Preston and Jai for organising and presenting the T1 assemblies.

The T1 staff would like to wish all students and their families a safe and happy Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you in 2020.

T2

What an awesome year we’ve had.

As the year comes to a close I can’t believe how much we have achieved while having so much fun. It’s been so lovely to see our students maturing and becoming independent young adults. I often have marvelled at how at a moment’s notice they can pull together to accommodate a change of plans or circumstance (a very useful life skill to have).

They are fabulous in the kitchen, they generously decided to cook lunch for everyone at school and include them in their end of year party. We joined the fun and had photos taken with the naughty Christmas Elves.

When we were making movies for Take 1 movie making competition, everyone pitched in to help everyone else, our movies were fabulous. Well done on a successful year everyone.

Daniela has had a great year in Year 11 at JTC ESC. She has enjoyed the programs she has participated in and has made great progress throughout the year. She has especially enjoyed having sensory play several times a week at the Murray Aquatic Centre in Pinjarra in hydrotherapy and horse riding at Horse Power. Other parts of her program have included music and going to the Coodanup Community Garden with Interchange.

Visage

Trish Bradford/Tess Wyllie/Marg Bowman

The students have had a very busy but productive year. The Visage team worked extremely hard to complete the theoretical component of the course and learning skills such as eyelash tinting, manicures, waxing, hair washing techniques and practicing blow drying and hair straightening.

The girls participated in excursions to Mercy Place and the RAAFA over a couple of weeks, this is where they engaged in conversations with the ladies whilst painting their nails and providing afternoon tea; the residents really enjoyed it.

Even with some ups and downs throughout the year as a group it has been an honour to see the maturity of all student’s blossomed in second semester, you all should be proud of yourselves. Well done.

I’d like to also send out a BIG thank you to my amazing colleagues, Tess Wyllie and Marg Bowman. Thank you for all that you did this year to help the students and myself, I could not have done this year without you.

Thank you all for an enjoyable year and I wish you all an exciting Christmas holiday break.

Retail – Certificate 1

Clare Munro/Nat Harris/Peter McClay and our amazing cooks – Jack, Lachlain, Jackson, Cameron

Term 4 started with a fundraising event to support ‘Peel Schools Say No To Violence’ this is a very worthy cause and a great effort was put in by the whole team. Well done!

We have continued to complete our course work, while operating our Sausage Sizzle enterprise on most Wednesday lunchtimes. We have also spent more time in the kitchen following recipes to cook a variety of dishes.

On our last Retail Day, we had an excursion to Perth, we decided to have lunch and attend a selection of retail/food outlets in order to experience and evaluate the customer service, workplace safety and organisation of each establishment. This included some transport training and catching the train to and from Perth. It was a fantastic day! There was already a Christmas feel in the city, we ate great food, worked hard and did some window shopping.

It has been an amazing year! We have had a lot of learning and a great deal of fun thanks to our flexible, skilled staff and our enthusiastic and talented students.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the 2019 Retail Team.

Workshop

Mark Barritt/Susan Vivian//Lorna Craggs/Trish Bradford/Tess Wyllie

In Term 4 students learnt about the difference between soft woods and hard woods whilst designing and making a ‘Jarrah’ and ‘Meranti’ laminated cutting board, finishing them off with fine sanding and sealing them with food grade mineral oil.

Some students had a go at making a copper enamelled pendant using a Vitreous enamelling process which fused powdered glass to copper, using heat.

Construction

Mark Barritt/Lorna Craggs/Meagan Green

The construction students finished off the year with the safe demolition of their projects and clean-up of the construction area and storage shed.

Well done everyone for a great year in Construction.

Emergency Cadet Program

Peter McClay/Nat Harris/Sharan Hegney/Julie Higham

Our Cadets were kept very busy during Term 4 with two excursions, two camps and the continuation our drill practice.

Our first excursion was to the DFES Education and Heritage Centre. Cadets practised their travel training by catching public transport from the school to the city. The visit to the Heritage Centre gave the Cadets the opportunity to see how the fire brigade and various emergency services had advanced both their techniques and equipment over the last 100 years, cadets also got to dress up in old style uniforms and check out the various fire trucks.

On the 11th November, our Cadet unit travelled to the Mandurah War Memorial to take part in the Remembrance Day Service, our unit laid 3 wreaths which the Cadets made by making red poppies embroidered with each Cadets and name and the logo “Remember Them”. On completion of the service and lunch our cadets made a large mural of red poppies painted on canvas which will be hung in the Cadet classroom.

The final two weeks of term was for the Year 12 and Year 11 Camps, this year we travelled to Woodman Point for a change and cadets enjoyed various activities including extreme sports, rock climbing, vertical challenge, flying fox, raft making and archery. On the first evening each cadet team went out for dinner followed by the movies and on our last night everyone enjoyed a couple of games of ten pin bowling. There were a lot of tired cadets once we had returned to Mandurah.

Graduation saw Sky Martin and Jai Magee receive the 2019 Year 11 Cadet of the Year and Most Outstanding Cadet awards respectively, while Clayton Annandale received the Year 12 Cadet of the Year and Blaze Kennedy received the 2019 Year 12 Most Outstanding Cadet award.

Our own Cadet Instructors Sharan Hegney and Natalie Harris were awarded their Cadets WA 10 Year Long Service Medals from Malcom Cronstedt AFSM, Deputy Commissioner Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Lynell Fozard Stategic Volunteer Coordinator – Youth Programs Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Workplace Learning

Kristin Lucas /Marg Bowman

Thank you to all parents/carers and students for being organised for the work day and representing our school so well within the community.

We are so proud of our students who have completed their work placements for 2019. Feedback from our fantastic and supportive employers has been wonderful.

Lily - Good Samaritans
Lachlain – Halo
Sherin – Halo
Cameron – JTC ESC kitchen
Chloe - Hot Klobba

We rounded off the year with some great work placements and our students gained valuable experience. Lachlain showed his prowess on the till at Halo and Sherin enjoyed working in the toy area. Lily showed her customer relations skills by greeting and helping customers. Cameron learned how to make white sauce and used his skills to make lasagne. Chloe enjoyed her work at Hot Klobba and completed all given tasks efficiently. Daniela completed her work placement at Interchange offices in November.

Students from FG03 (and one from T1) commenced their placements in Week 4, and have been working well in various locations in the community; Halo (Lachlain and Sherin), Coles Pinjarra (Monique), Good Samaritans (Lily), JTC ESC Kitchen (Cameron) and our long time host employer Hot Klobba are again giving two students some work experience (Sky and Chloe).

Two of our Year 12 students, Jackson and Preston, have also had the opportunity to complete a supplementary work placement at Workpower and they have shown a great work ethic for the duration of the placement. Workpower has indicated that they would like to offer both students work.

Our School is very privileged to have these local businesses support our workplace learning program and we would like to take the time to thank each business who helps our students experience meaningful work in a supportive environment

Transition

Jocelyn Carosin

We have a number of our graduating students who want to continue their studies and have enrolled at South Metro Tafe and at Fairbridge College to start the Leadership, Engagement and Development program.

How exciting for our graduating students! The Transition Team wish you all the best for 2020.

Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) Ready 4 Work Ready 4 Life Program

This Term, 4 of our students participated in a new program run by Good Samaritan Industries called Ready 4 Work Ready 4 Life. Our students were given the opportunity to learn more about Warehousing and the various roles, responsibilities and expectations of working in the Warehousing industry. Our students thoroughly enjoyed learning about a new industry and got to participate in hands on and practical work experience at the GSI Warehouse in Canning Vale.

Congratulations Blaze, Clayton, Jack and Jai for completing the GSI Warehousing Workshop

Art

Laura Tolomei/Charm Guest

What an awesome term we had in art and a fantastic end to the year. All our hard work and dedication to the task paid off. It took us a term and a half to complete our Ocean Man sculpture which we entered into the Castaways Sculpture Awards in Rockingham, and it paid off! WE WON FIRST PLACE in the Secondary School division, well done everyone. Also a big thank you to all the families that contributed to Ocean Man by making friendship bands, we finished up with about 600 of them. Ocean Man now has pride of place in the outdoor sitting area near the Admin Office.

Breakfast Club

Rebecca Christensen

Term 4 was a whirlwind, I had many helpers in the kitchen and one student was in the kitchen for their Work Placement. Each week we made dishes with ever increasing difficulty and the Breakfast Club students were the lucky ones. Cameron spoilt us with macaroni and cheese, lasagne, meat pie, frittatas, shepherd’s pie, curries and his amazing spaghetti bolognaise dishes.

This year myself and Mrs Howard created a recipe book from the Breakfast Club Kitchen, the book is being sent home to the graduating Year 12’s as a keepsake that I hope they will enjoy for years to come. I’m hoping to do this each year as a gift from the school.

We made gingerbread cookies this week and the students really enjoyed the decorating immensely.

My Christmas recipe this year is pavlova

Ingredients

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons cornflour
  • 600ml thickened cream (whipped)
  • Fruit of choice for topping

Method

  • Pre heat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, draw a 25cm circle on the parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gradually add in the sugar, about a 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat until thick and glossy. Gently fold in vanilla extract, lemon juice and cornflour.
  • Spoon mixture inside the circle drawn on the parchment paper. Working from the centre, spread mixture toward the outside edge, building edge slightly. This should leave a slight depression in the middle.
  • Bake for 1 hour, cool on a wire rack.
  • In a small bowl, whip cream until it forms soft peaks. Remove the paper and place pavlova on a flat serving plate. Fill the centre of the pavlova with whipped cream, decorate with sliced fruit.
